One preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a wood turning tool comprising a handle portion (1) and a cutting portion (2). The cutting portion comprises a blade (3) which has closed curve cutting edges. The tool comprises a deflector (14) for preventing the cutting portion from becoming blocked by wood shavings. The tool also comprises a blade cover (11) which can move across the blade (3) to regulate the cutting capacity of the tool. A threaded cylindrical member (12) can be manually operated to reversibly move the blade cover (11) across the blade (3).

A wood substitute turning blank and method of making the same is described. The turning blank includes a body having an outer shell of relatively low tensile strength material positioned about a rotational axis of the body. An inner core of relatively high tensile strength material is positioned along the rotational axis of the body. The high tensile strength of the inner core allows this turning blank to be turned at high speed on a lathe or the like. The high tensile strength of the core enhances the overall tensile strength of the finished product.

A copying cutting device for wood lathes including two securing stems, two form securing devices each transversely mounted at the bottom end of each securing stem, a guide track device mounted above the securing stems, a cutter mounting device having a cutter mounted thereon screwably provided at the bottom side of the guide track device, and a form tracing device screwably disposed at the rear end of the cutter. The forms securing device positions a copy, and a tracing rod of the form tracing device urges against the tracing edge of the copy. The cutter slides in the cutter mounting device, which in turn slides in the guide track device. The cutter cuts the workpiece following the contour of the copy with the help of the tracing rod.

A method of and apparatus for positioning and supporting any of several different elongated workpieces of circular, substantially square, or substantially non-square rectangular cross-sectional configuration so that a central workpiece axis is located along the same axis for any one of said workpieces includes a tailstock fixture for supporting one end of the workpiece which includes a frustoconical cavity that extends coaxial with the axis for receiving the one end of the workpiece, and a headstock fixture for supporting a second end of the workpiece opposite the first end which includes a generally cylindrical cavity extending coaxial with the axis and four equiangularly spaced workpiece engaging blades within the cylindrical cavity for engaging and supporting the second workpiece end.

A machine for carving workpieces having substantially similar configurations generally including a base member, means disposed on the base member for retaining at least one workpiece thereon, means for rotationally indexing the workpiece disposed on the retaining means, about an axis, a working tool operatively engageable with a workpiece disposed between the retaining means, supported on the base member and displaceable along x, y and z axes pursuant to a programmed sequence of motions coordinated with the workpiece indexing means for shaping the workpiece in a selected configuration, and at least one means for successively positioning a plurality of similarly configured workpieces in a selected orientation including a support member, a jointed linkage supported on the base member, supporting the support member and manipulatable to position the support member into a support relationship with an initial one of the workpieces disposed in the selected orientation and held by the retaining means, means for fixing the interrelationship of the components of the linkage when the support member is positioned in the support relationship with the initial workpiece to place the positioning means in an operative condition and means for displacing the positioning means when in the operative condition between an operative position for supporting a sequential one of the workpieces in the selected orientation and an inoperative position.

A saw for simultaneously cutting and beveling including a cut-off saw, a cutting blade, and a beveling blade. The cutting blade cuts simultaneously while the beveling blade bevels. The beveling blade preferably has a head with two faces annularly connected by an annular slanted circumference. The head has at least one notch suitable for accommodating a respective at least one tooth insert interconnected with a respective at least one cartridge. Each cartridge is interconnectable with a respective tooth insert.

A wood turning tool has an elongated handle with an end and a blade mounted to that end. The blade is formed as a plow with top and bottom surfaces and a working edge extending between those surfaces and having an apex. The working edge has an undercut ground bevel forming with the blade top surface a first cutting edge on one side of the apex and an overcut ground bevel forming with the blade bottom surface a second cutting edge on the other side of said apex, each bevel having a selected bevel angle.

A dowel maker having a first rough-sizing blade attached to a body with a micro-adjust assembly for adjusting blade position and a second finish-cutting blade also attached to a body with a micro-adjust assembly for adjusting blade position. Dowel diameters smaller than the largest diameter the body can accommodate may be produced using interchangeable front insert guides, and interchangeable rear guides are also used for different diameter dowels. A workpiece with a square cross-section end is driven through the dowel maker with a square recess socket driven by an electric hand drill.

A wood-turning lathe includes a driven shaft mounted with a pulley unit having a plurality of angularly spaced retaining holes, a spring-biased pin and a cam member associated with both the pin and the pulley unit. When the cam member is moved to a locking position, the pin is urged by the cam member to engage a selected one of the retaining holes in the pulley unit to immobilize the pulley unit. When the cam member is moved to an unlocking position, the pin disengages from the selected one of the retaining holes in the pulley unit to permit rotation of the pulley unit.

A wood lathe includes a driving pulley unit disposed around a rotating inner rod, a driven pulley unit disposed around an output shaft that is used to rotate a workpiece, a V-belt unit trained on the driving and driven pulley units, and a speed-adjusting unit. When a rotary knob is rotated, amovable inner half of the driven pulley unit moves toward or away from a fixed outer half of the driven pulley unit so that the V-belt unit moves a movable outer half of the driving pulley unit away from or toward a fixed inner half of the driving pulley unit. As such, the position of the V-belt unit can be adjusted relative to the driving and driven pulley units to change the rotational speed of the output shaft.

A wood lathe includes first and second seats disposed respectively and fixedly on two ends of a table. A first driving device includes a motor disposed on the second seat, an outer tube fixed between the first and second seats, and a rotating inner rod journalled within the tube and connected to the motor by a belt and pulley unit. An output shaft is journalled on the first seat, and is provided with a fixed first clamping element. A second clamping element is disposed adjacent to the second seat so as to clamp a workpiece between the first and second clamping elements. A second driving device is disposed within the first seat, and interconnects the shaft and the rod to transfer rotation of the rod to the shaft, thereby rotating the workpiece.

The present invention consists of a lathe attachment for installation on a portable bandsaw mill, for turning round shafts from wood blocks on the portable bandsaw mill. The lathe attachment has an elongated chassis, a tailstock and a headstock mounted on opposite ends of the chassis for holding and rotating a wood block along the chassis. Bindings are provided to retain the chassis to the cross beams of the portable bandsaw mill. In another aspect of the invention, a number of symmetrical facets are firstly sawed along the wood block prior to turning the wood block. The turning of a round shaft on the bandsaw mill is preferably effected while the alignment of the wood block or shaft makes an acute angle with the direction of movement of the bandsaw head.

A wood lathe includes an axial moving unit with a movable seat, which is sleeved movably on a driving rod and a guide rod that are parallel to each other. A driving gear is disposed rotatably on the movable seat, and engages a gear-engaging member of the driving rod. When an actuator member is rotated, the gear rotates synchronously therewith so as to move the movable seat on the driving rod. A sample bar and a bar blank are held on a bed of the lathe. A blade is carried on the movable seat for cutting the bar blank. A tracing unit is disposed on the movable seat so that a groove pattern on the sample bar is traced mechanically and is duplicated on the bar blank.

A lathe attachment device is disclosed for producing long articles with complicated profiles. The device contains a beveled multi-teeth cutter driven to rotate in a direction opposite the rotation of a billet to ensure a very short period of contact time between an individual cutting tooth and the article. The cutter is slightly tilted towards the billet in both horizontal and vertical plane. The teeth of the cutter are shaped to each have a pointed end facing the rough part of the billet. Provisions are made to draw the cutter along the billet. The device allows producing a smooth finished long article with complicated surface profile in a single pass with high productivity. Due to limited contact time, it offers extended life of the cutter. The device is used most advantageously to produce long wood articles.

A cutting tool piece is provided including a rear portion and a lead portion, the lead portion including a front section having an upper side angled downwardly and forwardly and a lower side angled upwardly and forwardly to form a transverse lead cutting edge. The rear portion includes a hole to secure the tool piece to a cutting tool and transverse cutting edges extending outwardly from side walls of the front section. A system is also described for cutting a bowl by coring out an interior portion of a wood block by applying the cutting tool which is curved and rotatably mounted to a post. Its lead end with the tool piece attached creates a circular groove. The cutting tool is advanced on a path which curves toward the central axis of the lathe.

A hollowing system for a lathe having a tool rest. The hollowing system comprises a boring member, and a stabilization assembly. The boring member is adapted to support a tool such that at least one of the boring member and the tool extend past and engage the tool rest. The stabilization assembly is mountable adjacent to the lathe. The stabilization assembly supports the boring member such that the boring member extends generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the lathe. The stabilization assembly has a vertical axis and a horizontal axis. The stabilization assembly is adapted to prevent downward movement of the tool when the stabilization assembly is mounted adjacent to the lathe and the tool is positioned on the tool rest. The stabilization assembly is provided with an articulation assembly. The articulation assembly supports the boring member and permits horizontal movement of the boring member about the vertical axis, while also permitting lateral movement of the boring member in a horizontal direction.

A cutting tool piece is provided including a rear portion and a lead portion, the lead portion including a front section having an upper side angled downwardly and forwardly and a lower side angled upwardly and forwardly to form a transverse lead cutting edge. The rear portion includes a hole to secure the tool piece to a cutting tool and transverse cutting edges extending outwardly from side walls of the front section. A system is also described for cutting a bowl by coring out an interior portion of a wood block by applying the cutting tool which is curved and rotatably mounted to a post. Its lead end with the tool piece attached creates a circular groove. The cutting tool is advanced on a path which curves toward the central axis of the lathe.

A woodturning tool for creating containers has a first rigid arm, and a second rigid arm. The first rigid arm has two ends with a cutting blade at the first end. The second rigid arm has two ends with a guiding device at the first end. The cutting blade and the guiding device are operatively aligned. The first and second rigid arms are adapted to move relative to one another.

A chuck (1) for angular offset woodturning including a first member (2) adapted to be secured to a lathe, and a second member (3) adapted to support a work piece and secured to the first member in such that the second member is oriented with respect to the first member between at least two configurations. The first member having a first axis (4) coaxial with an axis of rotation of the lathe and the second member having a second axis (5), and in one of the configurations the second axis is coaxial with the first axis, and in the other configuration the second axis is angularly offset. The chuck further includes a releasable fastening member (12) incorporating alignment members allowing the second member to be secured in one of the two configurations and that in the other configuration the second axis lies relative to said first axis at one of a number of predetermined angular offsets.

A hand-held cutting tool for use in cutting a turning timber workpiece, the cutting tool including a handle end, a tool shank having a width and a height wherein the width is greater than the height, and a curved neck that includes a cutting head. The curved neck is integral to the tool shank and has a width and a height wherein the height is greater than the width. The tool shank defines a tool rest portion having a planar surface. The cutting head includes a top surface that is coplanar to the tool rest portion and defines a centrally disposed threaded bore for threadably receiving a replaceable carbide cutter. The cutting head and a length of the tool shank extend parallel to each other and parallel to a longitudinal axis.

A lathe accessory for a band saw including a foundation assembly adapted to attach to a table for the band saw. A translating layer assembly engages the foundation assembly and is permitted to move thereon. A carriage assembly is disposed on the translating layer, the carriage assembly further comprising a frame subassembly and a bulkhead subassembly, the frame subassembly further comprising an endwall adapted to support a left end of a workplace, and a front frame rail and back frame rail both connected to a frame leg to thereby slidably connect the frame subassembly to the translating layer. The bulkhead subassembly forms the other side of the carriage to secure the other end of the workpiece. Internal components within the bulkhead motorize the bulkhead, such that the workpiece can be turned and manipulated in two dimensions as the bandsaw blade cuts the rotating workpiece.

An electron emission element (1) includes an electrode substrate (2) and a thin film electrode (3), and emits electrons from the thin film electrode (3) by voltage application across the electrode substrate (2) and the thin film electrode (3). An electron accelerating layer (4) containing at least insulating fine particles (5) is provided between the electrode substrate (2) and the thin film electrode (3). The electrode substrate (2) has a convexoconcave surface. The thin film electrode (3) has openings (6) above convex parts of the electrode substrate (2).

Magnetically adjusting color-converting particles within a matrix and associated devices, systems, and methods are disclosed herein. A magnetic-adjustment process can include applying a magnetic field to a mixture including a non-solid matrix and a plurality of color-converting particles (e.g. magnetically anisotropic color-converting particles). The magnetic field can cause the plurality of color-converting particles to move into a generally non-random alignment (e.g., a generally non-random magnetic alignment and/or a generally non-random shape alignment) within the non-solid matrix. The non-solid matrix then can be solidified to form a solid matrix. A magnetic-adjustment process can be performed in conjunction with testing and/or product binning of solid-state radiation transducer devices. For example, a position, direction, strength, or duration of a magnetic field used to perform a magnetic-adjustment process can be controlled according to optical output collected from a solid-state radiation transducer device. Measuring the optical output and performing the magnetic-adjustment process can be at least partially concurrent.

A wiring board includes a first multilayer wiring board having first conductive layers and having a surface, a second multilayer wiring board having second conductive layers and positioned such that the second multilayer wiring board has a surface facing the surface of the first multilayer wiring board, and an adhesive layer including an adhesive sheet and interposed between the first multilayer wiring board and the second multilayer wiring board such that the adhesive layer is adhering the first multilayer wiring board and the second multilayer wiring board. The first multilayer wiring board has a first pad on the surface of the first multilayer wiring board, the second multilayer wiring board has a second pad on the surface of the second multilayer wiring board, and the first pad and the second pad are positioned such that the first pad and the second pad face each other across the adhesive layer.

A retaining cap for a plasma torch is provided that includes fast securing threads. The retaining cap includes internal threads that couple to external threads of a torch body of the plasma torch. The internal and external threads may be multiple start threads having a thread angle greater than 60°. Plasma torches and plasma cutting systems are also provided.

A production machine (12) is proposed, in particular a machine tool or the like, having a machine housing (13) for at least partially enclosing the production machine (12) and having an operating state warning light device (1) for the optical display of at least one operating state of the production machine (12), in particular of multiple different operating states, wherein at least one warning light element (1) is provided, which is implemented as a light-emitting diode (1) and has a warning light surface, wherein the warning light element (1) is arranged on a carrier layer, wherein the warning light element (1) has at least one luminescent layer, which emits a warning light and is arranged between a first and a second electrode, in particular a cathode and an anode, wherein better perceptibility is achieved than in the prior art. This is achieved according to the invention in that the machine housing (13) at least comprises the warning light element (1), and in that the electrode surfaces of the electrodes substantially correspond to the warning light surface of the warning light element (1), and in that at least one of the electrodes is light-transmitting and/or transparent.

A high-pressure discharge lamp having an arc tube with a casing made of glass. The arc tube includes a light-emitting part and sealing parts connected to the light-emitting part. A pair of electrode rods are disposed within the glass casing such that their tips face each other with a gap therebetween and project into the discharge space, and their base ends are embedded in the sealing parts and overlap surfaces of metal foils provided in the sealing parts. Each base end is coated with a coating foil made of metal and having a C-like cross section with a slit formed between edges thereof. An end of the coating foil farthest from the light-emitting part is located closer to the light-emitting part than an end of the metal foil closest to the light-emitting part.

A pouring adaptor assembly compatible with multiple bucket lid types includes a pouring tube and a threaded adaptor. The pouring tube includes an opening and an angled proximate end for steadily pouring a liquid. The threaded adaptor includes an inner thread and an outer thread, the two threads for connecting to bucket lid openings of varying widths. The pouring tube includes a tapered lower ridge for snap connecting to a bucket lid having a non-threaded opening.

In a charging process of a shaft furnace, in particular of a blast furnace, batches of charge material are typically discharged in cyclical sequence into the furnace from a top hopper using a flow control valve. A method and system is proposed for adjusting the flow rate of charge material in such a process. Pre-determined valve characteristics for certain types of material are provided, each indicating the relation between flow rate and valve setting for one type of material. According to the invention, a specific valve characteristic is stored for each batch of charge material, each specific valve characteristic being bijectively associated to one batch and indicating the relation between flow rate and valve setting of the flow control valve specifically for the associated batch. In relation to discharging a given batch of the sequence the invention proposes: using the stored specific valve characteristic associated to the given batch for determining a requested valve setting corresponding to a flow rate setpoint and using the requested valve setting to operate the flow control valve; determining an actual average flow rate for the discharge of the given batch; correcting the stored specific valve characteristic associated to the given batch in case of a stipulated deviation between the flow rate setpoint and the actual average flow rate.

A double-chamber vessel for flowable substances having a lateral outer wall with a first chamber enclosed by a first, in particular transparent wall and a second chamber enclosed by a second transparent wall in which the first and second chambers each have an opening which openings end commonly in an opening section of the double-chamber vessel, otherwise they are completely separated from each other, wherein the first chamber is an inner chamber that is enclosed by the second chamber, which is an outer chamber, wherein in planar sections the first wall enclosing the first chamber lies directly against the second wall enclosing the second chamber, at the same time forming the lateral outer wall of the double-chamber vessel, or in the planar sections, the second wall forms the first wall and wherein both chambers have a continuous flow connection to the respective openings.

Disclosed is an improved an improved cap (40) for a bottle (1) which comprises a frangible device interface (100) including a valve part (52) and a tethered pull-ring (70), which frangible device interface may be removed from the cap preferably after the contents of the bottle are exhausted.

A fluid flow connector and a method of manufacturing the same wherein the fluid flow connector utilizes a valve having a plunger which is made by overmolding a soft exterior to a hard core. The soft exterior being overmolded to the hard core by either insert or multi-shot methods. The method also including attaching the soft exterior to the hard core mechanically and/or by molecular bonding.

Embodiments herein relate generally to distribution of flow into vessels containing packed beds of media. An example application of such beds is to pressure swing or temperature swing adsorption systems. Systems herein may include a vessel and a distributor for distributing flow into a lower portion of the vessel. The system may include: a vessel comprising a top head and a bottom head; and a bottom head feed/effluent nozzle. A lower distributor having at least one flow permitting surface is disposed within the vessel and encompasses an inlet of the bottom head feed/effluent nozzle. A flow gap is formed between a bottom portion of the lower distributor and the bottom head feed/effluent nozzle.

A paint can lid assembly having a universal paint cup port member adapted to receive and retain a paint spray cup in an inverted position such that unused paint will drain from the paint spray cup back into the paint can. The paint cup port member has a tubular main body that extends through the upper surface of the mixing lid, the internal bore of the main body being sufficiently sized so as to receive the mating spout of any type or brand of paint spray cup. In a preferred embodiment, the paint cup port member is provided with an annular locking shoulder to better secure paint spray cups possessing retention clip members.

A container assembly for use with a dispenser with a feed tube, the assembly comprising a container; a cap fixed to an opening in the container; the cap having a passageway therethrough to allow, in use, the feed tube of a dispenser to pass through the cap and into the container; the cap including a movable element secured to the cap in a first position prior to first insertion of the feed tube by a deformable support element arranged to deform upon insertion of the feed tube into the cap to free the movable element to be supported, in use, in a second position, by the feed tube to preserve the passageway, the movable element being configured to move, upon removal of the feed tube from the container, to a third position at least partially within the passageway in which replacement of the feed tube through the cap is obstructed.

An improved seed metering wheel assembly is provided to deliver a substantially constant flow of seed to a downstream treating device or the like, without any substantial surging of seeds. The seed metering wheel assembly includes an axially rotatable metering wheel having a plurality of strategically sized and arranged seed metering openings therethrough, arranged in circular arrays of differently sized metering openings. In another embodiment, the seed metering wheel includes a central hub section and an outermost rib, with a series of ribs between the hub section and rim, which lie along respective non-diameter chords. Incoming seed is delivered from a seed hopper outlet by gravitation to the metering wheel, which preferably provides a substantially constant open area while preventing wholly unobstructed flow of seeds.

Exemplary embodiments of pumps, refill units and dispensers are disclosed herein. Some embodiments include a container for holding a fluid and a pump housing secured to the container. The pump housing includes an annular collar for securing the pump housing to the container. The pump housing includes an air chamber and a vent valve located at least partially within the air chamber. One or more air passageways are provided in the collar for providing air to the air chamber. A compressible liquid pump chamber is also located in the housing. The exemplary embodiment includes a liquid inlet valve for allowing liquid to flow from the container into the compressible pump chamber; and a liquid outlet valve located downstream of the pump chamber.

A snorkel nozzle (10) having a double shell core (16, 26) that defines an annular gap (40) between the shells and that has an array of baffles (66) arranged in the annular gap to define a serpentine flow path for cooling gases that pass through the annular gap.

A dispenser system for delivering various combinations of dispersants to a body of water with the various combinations of dispersants supplied to the body of water through the interchanging of dispensing cartridges which are attachable to a main dispensing cartridge where a condition for interchanging of dispensing cartridges may be triggered by an event.

Apparatus and method for gravity-augmented preload of drive wheels in a monorail vehicle travelling along a guide rail bearing and contact surfaces that are non-parallel with the gravity vector. The vehicle has a structure defining a pivot location against the bearing surface, as well as first and second assemblies for engaging the rail on the bearing and contact surfaces, respectively. The vehicle is mounted so its center of gravity is at a rear longitudinal offset rrl from the pivot location and a vertical offset rvert from the guide rail. A force and moment balance thus created in a normal load on a drive wheel engaged with the bearing surface at the pivot location, where the load value exceeds a standard normal load generated by the mass of the monorail vehicle alone.

Connection system, with self-alignment, for elevator guides, in which the front surfaces thereof maintain a perfect 90° angle with respect to the longitudinal axis (e) of each guide (1) and there is a connection plate (2) that forms through-holes (241) that are offset and in correspondence with holes (141) in the wings (14), such that, when connection means (3) are mounted therein, a front self-alignment pressure is created between the two guides (1).

A roller coaster ride system comprising a first track section which is adapted to guide a passenger car and a second track section which extends in a first plane. The roller coaster ride system is characterized in that the second track section is attached to a platform which is moveably guided on a frame in a second plane that is inclined in relation to the first plane, in particular perpendicular thereto, and that the second track section can be coupled in a first position to the first track section in order to transfer a passenger car from the first track section to the second track section, andcan be in a second position is spatially offset along the second plane relative to the first position.

A ride system for giving passengers a flying roller coaster experience. The ride system includes a train of vehicles, with each of the vehicles including seat assemblies that each has a seat and seat back for receiving a passenger. The vehicles are supported by the track to roll along a length of the track, and the ride path is adapted for gravity-based movement of the train of vehicles in at least portions of the ride path. The track includes a vertical segment, and the ride system includes a station including a platform assembly with horizontal platforms vertically spaced-apart to provide multi-level loading. The train is positioned on the vertical segment with each of the vehicles proximate to an end of one of the horizontal platforms. The seat backs are substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the track to provide vertical loading and, then, vertical launching from the station.

A track set configured to be mounted to a wall by a plurality of wall mounts, the track set having: a tower: a first upper track section configured to receive toy vehicles from a top portion of the tower; a second lower track section, wherein the first upper track section is angularly positioned such that toy vehicles traveling along the first track section move towards a second lower track section, wherein the second lower track section is configured to direct the toy vehicles towards a bottom portion of a tower; a corkscrew rotationally secured to the tower; and a motor coupled to the corkscrew, wherein operation of the motor causes the corkscrew to rotate, wherein rotation of the corkscrew causes the toy vehicles to move from the bottom portion of the tower to the top portion of the tower.

Monorail vehicle that travels on a non-featured rail with substantial profile variation and controls roll attitude, lateral location, and loading through judicious placement of the vehicle's center of gravity without using springs or suspensions. The vehicle has a bogie for engaging the non-featured rail so the center of gravity has a lateral offset r1 from the rail centerline to produce a roll moment Nr determined by vehicle's mass and value of r1. The center of gravity also has a vertical offset r2. The bogie uses first and second assemblies for engaging the rail to produce a pair of surface normal reaction forces to thus control roll attitude and loading by the placement of the center of gravity, thereby enabling accurate alignment of the monorail vehicle.

The vehicle with wheelchair positioning mechanism includes an automotive vehicle that is modified to assist a disabled person to enter, operate and exit the vehicle. The modification includes a wheelchair lift adjacent the rear of the vehicle. An internal rail system extends from the rear of the vehicle to the front of the vehicle adjacent the vehicle's driving controls. A remotely controlled platform is rotatably mounted on a carriage for movement on the rail system. The platform is adapted to support a wheelchair thereon. The platform can be rotated 360° so that the wheelchair moves forward when entering and exiting the vehicle.

Disengageable chair-lift station having a transfer way made up of a first longitudinal part extending in alignment with the line of the carrying-hauling cable, and of a second transversal part extending perpendicular to the first part. The driving or return pulley is placed between the sections of the first part, and the disembarkation and embarkation platforms are shifted from one another in the second part, so that the disembarkation and embarkation of the skiers are performed on the same side of the station, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the line.

An elongated flexible open coil spring with spaced apart coils adapted to engage a guide pin on a slot car is placed in the slot of a model slot car track. Cars are positioned with their depending pins engaging the open coil spring to be carried around the track by a powered car held by and moving the open coil spring along the slot.

Aspects of the invention provide a transport system powered by short block Linear Synchronous Motors (LSMs). The use of short blocks allows vehicles to move under precise control even when they are in close proximity to each other. The design allows the vehicles to be propelled and guided while negotiating sharp turns and negotiating merge and diverge switches. A coreless LSM can be used to create propulsive force without attractive force so as to allow a relatively high drag vehicle suspension, such as a vehicle sliding on a smooth surface. Further aspects of the invention provide a switching member that is selectively moveable relative to a guideway in order to change a magnetic force acting on the vehicle transverse to a direction of motion of the vehicle.
