ps Generalised cepstral models for the spectrum of vector time series By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Tue, 05 May 2020 22:00 EDT Maddalena Cavicchioli. Source: Electronic Journal of Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 605--631.Abstract: The paper treats the modeling of stationary multivariate stochastic processes via a frequency domain model expressed in terms of cepstrum theory. The proposed model nests the vector exponential model of [20] as a special case, and extends the generalised cepstral model of [36] to the multivariate setting, answering a question raised by the last authors in their paper. Contemporarily, we extend the notion of generalised autocovariance function of [35] to vector time series. Then we derive explicit matrix formulas connecting generalised cepstral and autocovariance matrices of the process, and prove the consistency and asymptotic properties of the Whittle likelihood estimators of model parameters. Asymptotic theory for the special case of the vector exponential model is a significant addition to the paper of [20]. We also provide a mathematical machinery, based on matrix differentiation, and computational methods to derive our results, which differ significantly from those employed in the univariate case. The utility of the proposed model is illustrated through Monte Carlo simulation from a bivariate process characterized by a high dynamic range, and an empirical application on time varying minimum variance hedge ratios through the second moments of future and spot prices in the corn commodity market. ps (1 + epsilon)-class Classification: an Anomaly Detection Method for Highly Imbalanced or Incomplete Data Sets By Published On :: 2020 Anomaly detection is not an easy problem since distribution of anomalous samples is unknown a priori. We explore a novel method that gives a trade-off possibility between one-class and two-class approaches, and leads to a better performance on anomaly detection problems with small or non-representative anomalous samples. The method is evaluated using several data sets and compared to a set of conventional one-class and two-class approaches. Full Article
ps Bayesian modeling and prior sensitivity analysis for zero–one augmented beta regression models with an application to psychometric data By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 04 May 2020 04:00 EDT Danilo Covaes Nogarotto, Caio Lucidius Naberezny Azevedo, Jorge Luis Bazán. Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 34, Number 2, 304--322.Abstract: The interest on the analysis of the zero–one augmented beta regression (ZOABR) model has been increasing over the last few years. In this work, we developed a Bayesian inference for the ZOABR model, providing some contributions, namely: we explored the use of Jeffreys-rule and independence Jeffreys prior for some of the parameters, performing a sensitivity study of prior choice, comparing the Bayesian estimates with the maximum likelihood ones and measuring the accuracy of the estimates under several scenarios of interest. The results indicate, in a general way, that: the Bayesian approach, under the Jeffreys-rule prior, was as accurate as the ML one. Also, different from other approaches, we use the predictive distribution of the response to implement Bayesian residuals. To further illustrate the advantages of our approach, we conduct an analysis of a real psychometric data set including a Bayesian residual analysis, where it is shown that misleading inference can be obtained when the data is transformed. That is, when the zeros and ones are transformed to suitable values and the usual beta regression model is considered, instead of the ZOABR model. Finally, future developments are discussed. ps DualSMC: Tunneling Differentiable Filtering and Planning under Continuous POMDPs. (arXiv:1909.13003v4 [cs.LG] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: A major difficulty of solving continuous POMDPs is to infer the multi-modal distribution of the unobserved true states and to make the planning algorithm dependent on the perceived uncertainty. We cast POMDP filtering and planning problems as two closely related Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) processes, one over the real states and the other over the future optimal trajectories, and combine the merits of these two parts in a new model named the DualSMC network. In particular, we first introduce an adversarial particle filter that leverages the adversarial relationship between its internal components. Based on the filtering results, we then propose a planning algorithm that extends the previous SMC planning approach [Piche et al., 2018] to continuous POMDPs with an uncertainty-dependent policy. Crucially, not only can DualSMC handle complex observations such as image input but also it remains highly interpretable. It is shown to be effective in three continuous POMDP domains: the floor positioning domain, the 3D light-dark navigation domain, and a modified Reacher domain. Full Article
ps Multi-scale analysis of lead-lag relationships in high-frequency financial markets. (arXiv:1708.03992v3 [stat.ME] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: We propose a novel estimation procedure for scale-by-scale lead-lag relationships of financial assets observed at high-frequency in a non-synchronous manner. The proposed estimation procedure does not require any interpolation processing of original datasets and is applicable to those with highest time resolution available. Consistency of the proposed estimators is shown under the continuous-time framework that has been developed in our previous work Hayashi and Koike (2018). An empirical application to a quote dataset of the NASDAQ-100 assets identifies two types of lead-lag relationships at different time scales. Full Article

ps Measuring human activity spaces from GPS data with density ranking and summary curves By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Wed, 15 Apr 2020 22:05 EDT Yen-Chi Chen, Adrian Dobra. Source: The Annals of Applied Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 409--432.Abstract: Activity spaces are fundamental to the assessment of individuals’ dynamic exposure to social and environmental risk factors associated with multiple spatial contexts that are visited during activities of daily living. In this paper we survey existing approaches for measuring the geometry, size and structure of activity spaces, based on GPS data, and explain their limitations. We propose addressing these shortcomings through a nonparametric approach called density ranking and also through three summary curves: the mass-volume curve, the Betti number curve and the persistence curve. We introduce a novel mixture model for human activity spaces and study its asymptotic properties. We prove that the kernel density estimator, which at the present time, is one of the most widespread methods for measuring activity spaces, is not a stable estimator of their structure. We illustrate the practical value of our methods with a simulation study and with a recently collected GPS dataset that comprises the locations visited by 10 individuals over a six months period. ps Bayesian factor models for probabilistic cause of death assessment with verbal autopsies By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Wed, 15 Apr 2020 22:05 EDT Tsuyoshi Kunihama, Zehang Richard Li, Samuel J. Clark, Tyler H. McCormick. Source: The Annals of Applied Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 241--256.Abstract: The distribution of deaths by cause provides crucial information for public health planning, response and evaluation. About 60% of deaths globally are not registered or given a cause, limiting our ability to understand disease epidemiology. Verbal autopsy (VA) surveys are increasingly used in such settings to collect information on the signs, symptoms and medical history of people who have recently died. This article develops a novel Bayesian method for estimation of population distributions of deaths by cause using verbal autopsy data. The proposed approach is based on a multivariate probit model where associations among items in questionnaires are flexibly induced by latent factors. Using the Population Health Metrics Research Consortium labeled data that include both VA and medically certified causes of death, we assess performance of the proposed method. Further, we estimate important questionnaire items that are highly associated with causes of death. This framework provides insights that will simplify future data Full Article
ps A hierarchical Bayesian model for predicting ecological interactions using scaled evolutionary relationships By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Wed, 15 Apr 2020 22:05 EDT Mohamad Elmasri, Maxwell J. Farrell, T. Jonathan Davies, David A. Stephens. Source: The Annals of Applied Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 221--240.Abstract: Identifying undocumented or potential future interactions among species is a challenge facing modern ecologists. Recent link prediction methods rely on trait data; however, large species interaction databases are typically sparse and covariates are limited to only a fraction of species. On the other hand, evolutionary relationships, encoded as phylogenetic trees, can act as proxies for underlying traits and historical patterns of parasite sharing among hosts. We show that, using a network-based conditional model, phylogenetic information provides strong predictive power in a recently published global database of host-parasite interactions. By scaling the phylogeny using an evolutionary model, our method allows for biological interpretation often missing from latent variable models. To further improve on the phylogeny-only model, we combine a hierarchical Bayesian latent score framework for bipartite graphs that accounts for the number of interactions per species with host dependence informed by phylogeny. Combining the two information sources yields significant improvement in predictive accuracy over each of the submodels alone. As many interaction networks are constructed from presence-only data, we extend the model by integrating a correction mechanism for missing interactions which proves valuable in reducing uncertainty in unobserved interactions. ps Local differential privacy: Elbow effect in optimal density estimation and adaptation over Besov ellipsoids By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 27 Apr 2020 04:02 EDT Cristina Butucea, Amandine Dubois, Martin Kroll, Adrien Saumard. Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 3, 1727--1764.Abstract: We address the problem of non-parametric density estimation under the additional constraint that only privatised data are allowed to be published and available for inference. For this purpose, we adopt a recent generalisation of classical minimax theory to the framework of local $alpha$-differential privacy and provide a lower bound on the rate of convergence over Besov spaces $mathcal{B}^{s}_{pq}$ under mean integrated $mathbb{L}^{r}$-risk. This lower bound is deteriorated compared to the standard setup without privacy, and reveals a twofold elbow effect. In order to fulfill the privacy requirement, we suggest adding suitably scaled Laplace noise to empirical wavelet coefficients. Upper bounds within (at most) a logarithmic factor are derived under the assumption that $alpha$ stays bounded as $n$ increases: A linear but non-adaptive wavelet estimator is shown to attain the lower bound whenever $pgeq r$ but provides a slower rate of convergence otherwise. An adaptive non-linear wavelet estimator with appropriately chosen smoothing parameters and thresholding is shown to attain the lower bound within a logarithmic factor for all cases. Full Article
ps A unified principled framework for resampling based on pseudo-populations: Asymptotic theory By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Fri, 31 Jan 2020 04:06 EST Pier Luigi Conti, Daniela Marella, Fulvia Mecatti, Federico Andreis. Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 2, 1044--1069.Abstract: In this paper, a class of resampling techniques for finite populations under $pi $ps sampling design is introduced. The basic idea on which they rest is a two-step procedure consisting in: (i) constructing a “pseudo-population” on the basis of sample data; (ii) drawing a sample from the predicted population according to an appropriate resampling design. From a logical point of view, this approach is essentially based on the plug-in principle by Efron, at the “sampling design level”. Theoretical justifications based on large sample theory are provided. New approaches to construct pseudo populations based on various forms of calibrations are proposed. Finally, a simulation study is performed. Full Article

ps Bayesian Bootstraps for Massive Data By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Thu, 19 Mar 2020 22:02 EDT Andrés F. Barrientos, Víctor Peña. Source: Bayesian Analysis, Volume 15, Number 2, 363--388.Abstract: In this article, we present data-subsetting algorithms that allow for the approximate and scalable implementation of the Bayesian bootstrap. They are analogous to two existing algorithms in the frequentist literature: the bag of little bootstraps (Kleiner et al., 2014) and the subsampled double bootstrap (Sengupta et al., 2016). Our algorithms have appealing theoretical and computational properties that are comparable to those of their frequentist counterparts. Additionally, we provide a strategy for performing lossless inference for a class of functionals of the Bayesian bootstrap and briefly introduce extensions to the Dirichlet Process. Full Article
