With card and shipping details saved on your phone or within the app you'll never have to go through multiple "pay now" screens again. Subscribe to WIRED ►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired This is Relay and it allows apps to handle anonymous payment information, the latest part of Stripe's plan to create a mobile space for retail. Retailers currently using the technology include Warby Parker, Best Buy and Adidas. Currently, less than five percent of all transactions take place online, and only 15 percent of those go through mobile, James Allgrove, head of UK growth at e-commerce business Stripe, told WIRED Retail. That's in spite of 60 percent of all browsing taking place on mobile devices. Poaching the Poachers: How Kenya is Saving Elephants with Night Vision Tech

In the last decade, Africa’s elephant population has declined by around 110,000, primarily due to poaching. The slaughter of African rhinos has also skyrocketed — 1,175 were killed in South Africa in 2015 alone, compared with 13 in 2007. Because poachers operate mostly under the cover of night, this type of crime is hard to tackle. In December 2012, Google awarded WWF a $5 million grant to tackle the poaching crisis through technology, launching the Wildlife Crime Technology Project. They have collaborated with FLIR, a thermal imaging company, to design a new infrared camera capable of detecting human movement at night, and have installed cameras around Kenya's Maasai Mara Conservancy. Since the programme started, local rangers have nabbed over 150 poachers. How Climeworks is Creating Negative Emission Power Plants

In the not-so-distant future, dealing safely with our emissions in a carbon-neutral way will be as natural to us as it is to have our trash picked up by our municipalities, says Jan Wurzbacher, founder of Climeworks. In 2017, Climeworks opened the world’s first negative emissions plant – capturing CO2 at a geothermal plant in Iceland, and turning it into rock. #pollution #geothermal #iceland ABOUT WIRED SMARTER Experts and business leaders from the worlds of Energy, Money and Retail gathered at Kings Place, London, for WIRED Smarter on October 9, 2018. Why Humans Can’t Lift as Much as Ants (And How We Could)

Ants have been documented to be able to carry up to twenty times their own body weight. If a human could lift twenty times their body weight that would be about 4,000 pounds. Ant biologist Fred Larabee and paleoanthropologist John Hawks talk about how humans lift heavy weights and why we can't lift as much as ants. John and Fred also look into what it would take for humans to be able to lift as much as ants can. Fred Larabee is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History John Hawks is an expert in paleoanthropology, genetics, and evolution. You can find out more on his website here: https://johnhawks.net/. He is also professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

WIRED senior editor, Michael Calore makes music with plants, live on stage! The four plants are each playing individual instruments: gamelan (high), gamelan (low), synth bass, and cricket sounds. The notes you hear are triggered generativity—the sensors stuck to the leaves pick up electrical activity within the plant and translate that to data that digital musical instruments can understand.
