A row has erupted in response to the tenant fee ban, with some landlord and agents reacting with fury to what they say are ‘unworkable’ plans that would have a ‘boomerang’ effect.

On May 1, protesters in New York, California, Chicago and Philadelphia called for a widespread rent strike to support those tenants who are out of work and unable to pay the rent.

The Government paying rents may be the only way to keep some tenants in their homes amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Demand for rental properties has bounced back 30 per cent in the first two weeks of April after plummeting 57 per cent in the last two weeks of March, Zoopla said.

"Most of the landlords are extending a helping hand to the tenants - 44 percent have not increased the rent, 41 percent are giving more time to their tenants to pay and 16 percent have waived the rent for up to two months," the portal, which has over 10 lakh residential and commercial properties listed by owners and brokers, said in a statement.
