Pollution from pot plants, and how our bodies perceive processed foods

The “dank” smelling terpenes emitted by growing marijuana can combine with chemicals in car emissions to form ozone, a health-damaging compound. This is especially problematic in Denver, where ozone levels are dangerously high and pot farms have sprung up along two highways in the city. Host Sarah Crespi talks with reporter Jason Plautz about researchers’ efforts to measure terpene emissions from pot plants and how federal restrictions have hampered them. Next, host Meagan Cantwell talks with Dana Small, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University, about how processed foods are perceived by the body. In a doughnut-rich world, what’s a body to think about calories, nutrition, and satiety? And in the first book segment of the year, books editor Valerie Thompson is joined by Erika Malim, a history professor at Princeton University, to talk about her book Creatures of Cain: The Hunt for Human Nature in Cold War America, which follows the rise and fall of the “killer ape hypothesis”—the idea that our capacity for killing each other is what makes us human. A solution-processed zero-dimensional all-inorganic perovskite scintillator for high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy detection

Nanoscale, 2020, 12,9727-9732
DOI: 10.1039/D0NR00772B, Paper
Qiang Xu, Juan Wang, Wenyi Shao, Xiao Ouyang, Xiang Wang, Xinlei Zhang, Yong Guo, Xiaoping Ouyang
A zero-dimensional all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystal embedded Cs4PbBr6 scintillator has been achieved. Owing to the low dimensional quantum effect, this all-inorganic scintillator exhibits desirable scintillation performance.

High charge carrier mobility in solution processed one-dimensional lead halide perovskite single crystals and their application as photodetectors

Nanoscale, 2020, 12,9688-9695
DOI: 10.1039/D0NR01495H, Paper
Tianjun Liu, Weidong Tang, Sally Luong, Oliver Fenwick
Large space-charge limited mobility and a fast optical response is reported in low dimensional halide perovskite crystals. A transition between hopping transport and band-like transport is observed at 200 K.
