Linux Kernel Sendpage Local Privilege Escalation

The Linux kernel failed to properly initialize some entries the proto_ops struct for several protocols, leading to NULL being derefenced and used as a function pointer. By using mmap(2) to map page 0, an attacker can execute arbitrary code in the context of the kernel. Several public exploits exist for this vulnerability, including spender's wunderbar_emporium and rcvalle's ppc port, sock_sendpage.c. All Linux 2.4/2.6 versions since May 2001 are believed to be affected: 2.4.4 up to and including 2.4.37.4; 2.6.0 up to and including 2.6.30.4

macOS Kernel wait_for_namespace_event() Race Condition / Use-After-Free

In the macOS kernel, the XNU function wait_for_namespace_event() in bsd/vfs/vfs_syscalls.c releases a file descriptor for use by userspace but may then subsequently destroy that file descriptor using fp_free(), which unconditionally frees the fileproc and fileglob. This opens up a race window during which the process could manipulate those objects while they're being freed. Exploitation requires root privileges.

Kernel Live Patch Security Notice LSN-0065-1

Andrew Honig reported a flaw in the way KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) emulated the IOAPIC. A privileged guest user could exploit this flaw to read host memory or cause a denial of service (crash the host). It was discovered that the KVM implementation in the Linux kernel, when paravirtual TLB flushes are enabled in guests, the hypervisor in some situations could miss deferred TLB flushes or otherwise mishandle them. An attacker in a guest VM could use this to expose sensitive information (read memory from another guest VM). Al Viro discovered that the vfs layer in the Linux kernel contained a use- after-free vulnerability. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly expose sensitive information (kernel memory).

kernel

Microsoft Windows Kernel Privilege Escalation

This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges on affected installations of Microsoft Windows. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the Tracing functionality used by the Routing and Remote Access service. The issue results from the lack of proper permissions on registry keys that control this functionality. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute code in the context of SYSTEM.

Researchers at the National Library of Medicine’s National Center for Biotechnology Information have created a new algorithm called scPopCorn (single-cell subpopulations comparison) to capture the differences among populations of cells from single-cell experiments. The algorithm, developed by my team is available at GitHub and is described in an article in Cell Systems (Y. Wang, J. Honka, and T.M. Przytycka, Cell…
