Pesticides: possible link to male infertility

Many agricultural pesticides used in Europe could disrupt male hormones and lead to infertility problems, according to laboratory tests. ‘Biomonitoring’ studies to investigate the actual behaviour of pesticides in the human body are now urgently needed to clarify the link between pesticide exposure and male reproductive health.

Are endocrine disrupting chemicals responsible for downward trends in male fertility?

A growing body of evidence suggests that endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are contributing to declines in fertility. This case-control study found that EDCs were associated with changes to sex hormones and risk of subfertility in men. The researchers say environmental levels of these chemicals should be reduced to protect male fertility.

Fertility Rate Trends Among Adolescent Girls With Major Mental Illness: A Population-Based Study

Although fertility rates among adolescents have declined in recent years, certain groups of adolescent girls remain at risk. Whereas adolescents with major mental illness have many risk factors for teenage pregnancy, their fertility rates have not been yet to be examined.

Fertility rates among adolescent girls with major mental illness are almost 3 times higher than among unaffected adolescents and are not decreasing to the same extent. Mental health considerations are highly important for pregnancy prevention and for perinatal interventions targeting adolescents. (Read the full article)

Privacy concerns slow Facebook studies, and how human fertility depends on chromosome counts

On this week’s show, Senior News Correspondent Jeffrey Mervis talks with host Sarah Crespi about a stalled Facebook plan to release user data to social scientists who want to study the site’s role in elections. Sarah also talks with Jennifer Gruhn, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Copenhagen Center for Chromosome Stability, about counting chromosomes in human egg cells. It turns out that cell division errors that cause too many or too few chromosomes to remain in the egg may shape human fertility over our reproductive lives. Finally, in this month’s book segment, Kiki Sanford talks with Daniel Navon about his book Mobilizing Mutations: Human Genetics in the Age of Patient Advocacy.
