In the past two months, the industry has lost about Rs 2,000 crore as stay-at-home orders and social distancing norms kept moviegoers away. Looking at historical evidence on how people flocked to cinema halls after World War II, or after a 45-day strike in India in 2009, multiplex players are hopeful of a repeat this time if safety can be assured.

Data suggests average daily reach has now stabilised at 627 million. The highlight of the week was an all-time high viewership of 4 billion impressions by the Hindi GEC genre in the Hindi speaking market, urban region.

English movies registered a 91% increase in viewership for the week ended April 10 from the pre-lockdown period, while for English general entertainment channels, the figure was 41%, according to BARC India data sourced from subscribers.

What is even more worrying is uncertainty. Even when the lockdown is lifted, social-distancing measures will remain the norm and that will mean no live events for a some more time, say comedy circuit insiders. They expect the dry spell to continue for the next 6-8 months, at least.

The government has advised people not to follow sensational news or social media posts which impact their mental state, follow facts and not rumours during the lockdown period.

It turns out that both human behavior and the difficulty of water measurement are plaguing water conservation efforts in agriculture. For example, when farms find they are using less water, they tend to plant ever-more-water-intensive crops. Now, researchers are trying to get the message out about the behavioral component of this issue and tackle the measurement problem, using cheap remote-sensing technology, but with water scarcity looming ahead, we have to act soon. Plan S, an initiative that requires participating research funders to immediately publish research in an open-access journal or repository, was announced in September 2018 by Science Europe with 11 participating agencies. Several others have signed on since the launch, but other funders and journal publishers have reservations. Host Meagan Cantwell speaks with Contributing Correspondent Tania Rabesandratana about those reservations and how Plan S is trying to change publishing practices and research culture at large. Some 1.7 million Jewish people were murdered by the Nazis in the 22 months of Operation Reinhard (1942–43) which aimed to eliminate all Jews in occupied Poland. But until now, the speed and totality of these murders were poorly understood. It turns out that about one-quarter of all Jews killed during the Holocaust were murdered in the autumn of 1942, during this operation. Meagan talks with Lewi Stone, a professor of biomathematics at Tel Aviv University in Israel and mathematical science at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, about this shocking kill rate, and why researchers are taking a quantitative approach to characterizing genocides. GST Network Helpdesk on Sunday said it has handled over 56,000 taxpayer issues in one month since the nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25.

The loan has been disbursed under a refinance scheme by Nabard from its own resources and was given this week. "An amount of Rs 12,767 crore has been disbursed this week to StCBs and RRBs across the country in a bid to augment their resources during the ongoing lockdown conditions for extending credit to farmers," Nabard said.

With the nationwide lockdown to fight the COVID-19 pandemic restricting inter- and intra-state traffic to essential services, toll collections from build-operate-transfer (BOT) highway projects, and remittances from publicly funded projects would decline sharply in the near term, Crisil report said.

Their period of overstay in India due to lockdown could be exempted, as prescribed by OECD.
