Central Ohio television viewers who use antennas had to rescan their television sets to comply with the Federal Communications Commission roll out of 5G technology. Local numbers aren’t available, but nationally, 16 million households or 14% of Americans, use an antenna to watch TV free over-the-air. That number continues to grow in the age of cord cutting.

Ohioans bought 1.36 million gallons of liquor in March, a nearly 25 percent increase over the same period last year. "Compliments of the day" email scam removal guide

What is "Compliments of the day" email scam?

In most cases scams that are sent via email are used to trick recipients into providing some sensitive information, transferring money or even opening files designed to install some malware. In this case scammer seeks to trick recipients into believing that he can get a huge sum of money out of his country but he cannot do that on his own and requests for assistance, in return for an investment opportunity. Typically, scams of this type are used to extract money from unsuspecting people. This or any other similar scam should be ignored.

Chicago high school junior Jessica Tansey was concerned about her classmates whose families would struggle with food insecurity during the school closure for COVID-19. At the same time, she was concerned about the restaurants in her neighborhood and the negative effect the COVID-19 shutdowns were having on them. She came up with and launched a campaign called “A Meal Today, A Meal Tomorrow” to help with both community issues.

It works by a customer buying one gift card at a nearby restaurant, and the restaurant agreeing to donate a second gift card to Tansey’s high school, which is then given to a school family in need. While some of the larger restaurant chains are able to commit to matching gift cards dollar-for-dollar, many smaller restaurants are donating gift cards worth a percentage of the one purchased to help out. Tansey said, “If we can connect restaurants and students with one solution, maybe it can make a difference for everybody. I want to get all of us thinking about how to bring communities together to support each other during rough times.”

Senator Richard Burr's potential insider trading issues, for which he's being investigated, may have gotten quite a bit worse this week. A new report notes that on the same day Burr sold off a "significant percentage" of his stock holdings (while also telling the public not to worry about COVID-19), it turns out his brother-in-law just coincidentally decided to dump a bunch of stock too. Amazing!

Sen. Richard Burr was not the only member of his family to sell off a significant portion of his stock holdings in February, ahead of the market crash spurred by coronavirus fears. On the same day Burr sold, his brother-in-law also dumped tens of thousands of dollars worth of shares. The market fell by more than 30% in the subsequent month.

Burr’s brother-in-law, Gerald Fauth, who has a post on the National Mediation Board, sold between $97,000 and $280,000 worth of shares in six companies — including several that have been hit particularly hard in the market swoon and economic downturn.

Could this actually be a coincidence? Sure. Maybe. But the timing (the very same day...) does seem notable. As the ProPublica report notes, Fauth "is not a frequent stock trader." Burr insists that his sales were based on public information, though it's difficult to see how he could simply ignore the classified briefings he got concerning the rising pandemic issues, and base decisions entirely on public information. Indeed, this is why government officials should be required to hand off any equities like this to a blind trust where they have no visibility into how it's traded.

Even if this is all legal (which is not certain either way yet...), it again reinforces the belief that the powerful live by different rules and are able to game the system for personal advantage, even as they're supposed to be serving the public interest.

Today’s Doodle, illustrated by British guest artist Robin Davey, commemorates St. George’s Day. On the annual celebration of the patron saint, England celebrates St. George and his representation of values like bravery, integrity, and leadership.

According to legend, St. George single-handedly slew a dragon to rescue a city under siege. For centuries, he captured the English imagination; in fact, King Henry V’s veneration for St. George was even immortalized in William Shakespeare’s eponymous play about the monarch.  

St. George was declared England’s patron saint in 1348, and in 1415 St. George’s Day was inaugurated as a national feast day in his honor. Today, the special day lives on as a testament to England’s culture and unique traditions through activities like morris dancing (a rural folk custom) and medieval jousting.

Q: Why was this topic meaningful to you personally? 

A: As a Briton living abroad, it was nice to make something connected to my home country.

Q: What were your first thoughts when you were approached about the project?

A: My mum, who checks the Doodle daily, will be thrilled :)

Q: Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle? 

A: I wanted to reframe the story of George and the dragon as one of friends, not adversaries.

Q: What message do you hope people take away from your Doodle?

A: That peaceful cooperation with our neighbours is preferable to conflict.
