While coordinated action is urgently needed, should we be racing to download everything that promises a solution?

(Crime and Justice Research Alliance) A new study evaluated the effects of legalizing cannabis on police officers' law enforcement efforts in Washington. The study found that officers in that state, although not supportive of recriminalization, had a variety of concerns, from worries about the effect on youth to increases in impaired driving. The study can inform other states' efforts to address legalization.

Noncitizens have long served in the U.S. military, often encouraged by the promise of a fast track to U.S. citizenship. In recent years, however, Congress and the Defense Department have made it more difficult for noncitizens to enlist. This brief give context to these policy changes and explores ways the military could better balance concerns about national security and the need for recruits with key cultural and professional skills.

BACKGROUND:

Long delays between parents’ initial concerns about their children’s development and a subsequent autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis are common. Although discussions between parents and providers about early ASD concerns can be difficult, they are critical for initiating early, specialized services. The principles of shared decision-making can facilitate these discussions. This qualitative study was designed to gain insights from parents of young children with ASD about their experiences communicating with primary care providers with the goal of identifying strategies for improving conversations and decision-making regarding the early detection of ASD.

Routine screening of potentially abused children with hepatic transaminases has been recommended, using a threshold of 80 IU/L to determine the need for further testing, but practice is variable, and this threshold has not been validated.

Although most US mothers initiate breastfeeding, half fail to achieve their breastfeeding intentions. In cross-sectional and retrospective surveys, early breastfeeding difficulties are often cited as reasons for stopping breastfeeding earlier than intended.

We characterized 4179 breastfeeding concerns/problems as reported by primiparas interviewed prospectively. Concerns were highly prevalent and associated with up to ninefold greater risk of stopping breastfeeding earlier than intended. Concerns at 3 to 7 days posed the greatest risk.
