High Doses of Methylprednisolone in the Management of Caustic Esophageal Burns

Corrosive substance ingestion is a public health issue in developing countries. Stricture formation is a late complication of corrosive substance ingestion. The role of corticosteroids in preventing corrosive-induced strictures is controversial.

High doses of methylprednisolone therapy lead to less frequent stricture formation in grade IIb esophageal burns in children who ingested caustic substances and may improve prognosis. (Read the full article)

Mortality After Burn Injury in Children: A 33-year Population-Based Study

Burns are a leading cause of pediatric emergency department visits and hospitalizations and are often associated with significant long-term physical and psychological consequences and long-term medical and nursing treatments. Little is known of the long-term impacts of burns on mortality.

Children with burns had a 1.6 times greater rate of long-term mortality than a matched population-based cohort of children with no injury. Total mortality burden based on in-hospital deaths alone underestimates the true burden from both minor and severe burns. (Read the full article)

Long-term Effects of Pediatric Burns on the Circulatory System

Systemic responses occur after burn injury that lead to widespread changes to the body, including the heart. Elevated levels of catecholamines and stress hormones have been found up to 3 years after severe burns. Little is known about the longer-term effects.

Children with burns had 1.3 times as many admissions and 2.3 times the number of days in hospital for circulatory diseases compared with uninjured children. Children with minor burns had an increased risk of incident admissions for circulatory diseases. (Read the full article)

Controlled burn sets stage for U.S. 301 pollinator site

A controlled burn on a 43-acre former farm field along U.S. Route 301 will provide fertile ground for "Delaware's first pollinator mitigation site" - where state officials hope native wildflowers will flourish to restore lost habitat for pollinators such as bees and birds. The Delaware Forest Service  conducted the successful firing operation on March 20 in cooperation DelDOT and DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife, which supplied valuable personnel, logistical support, and equipment. Thanks to favorable weather conditions and DelDOT lane adjustments on U.S. 301 North, the four-hour burn caused minimal disruptions to traffic and virtually no smoke effects on the adjacent Spring Mill housing development.

High-Content Screening, a Reliable System for Coxiella burnetii Isolation from Clinical Samples [Bacteriology]

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a worldwide zoonotic disease that may cause severe forms in humans and requires a specific and prolonged antibiotic treatment. Although current serological and molecular detection tools allow a reliable diagnosis of the disease, culture of C. burnetii strains is mandatory to assess their susceptibility to antibiotics and sequence their genome in order to optimize patient management and epidemiological studies. However, cultivating this fastidious microorganism is difficult and restricted to reference centers, as it requires biosafety level 3 laboratories and relies on cell culture performed by experienced technicians. In addition, the culture yield is low, which results in a small number of isolates being available. In this work, we developed a novel high-content screening (HCS) isolation strategy based on optimized high-throughput cell culture and automated microscopic detection of infected cells with specifically designed algorithms targeting cytopathic effects. This method was more efficient than the shell vial assay, at the level of time dependency, when applied to both frozen specimens (7 isolates recovered by HCS only, sensitivity 91% versus 78% for shell vial) and fresh samples (1 additional isolate using HCS, sensitivity 7% versus 5% for shell vial), for which most strains were recovered more rapidly with the new technique. In addition, detecting positive cultures by an automated microscope reduced the need for expertise and saved 24% of technician working time. Application of HCS to antibiotic susceptibility testing of 12 strains demonstrated that it was as efficient as the standard procedure that combines shell vial culture and quantitative PCR.

Burning The Poplar Fluff Blanket Off Park Grass In Spain

This is a video from the Parque del Cidacos in Calahorra, La Rioja, Spain of a controlled burn of the poplar fluff (the very fine, kinda dandelion-like seeds released by female poplar trees) atop the grass in the park. As you can see, the fluff burns incredibly quickly, leaving the grass below unharmed. The time I spelled my girlfriend's name in gasoline in her parent's yard and set it ablaze? Thank God their homeowner's insurance covered detached garages! Keep going for the full video.
