social media Ferguson Incident and America’s Image in Africa: Social Media Weighs in on Race and Human Rights By webfeeds.brookings.edu Published On :: Fri, 29 Aug 2014 11:48:00 -0400 The full story of the killing of Michael Brown, a young, black, unarmed man shot by a policeman in Ferguson, Missouri, is still unfolding—and the truth will not be known for some time. It is only after full investigations are completed that an objective evaluation of the incident can be made. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that the killing of the young man was unfortunate and has generated a serious debate about race relations in America, and on the relations between police and the communities that they are supposed to protect. The riots and massive looting portrayed not only the extent of criminality in America’s inner cities, but also the economic marginalization of the minority communities. Coming not long after the successful U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit held in Washington, the Ferguson incident and the follow-up demonstrations have been rather unfortunate in as far as how Africans view America—in a way questioning America’s standing as a protector of human rights. The hostility towards the United States in regard to its treatment of African-Americans has dominated social media with claims that the incident shows that America should not claim leadership when it comes to human rights. Such criticisms by many other countries, including Russia and China, are widespread. I was particularly surprised by the comments in the Kenyan media coverage of this topic. Here are some statements on the topic by readers of the most popular paper there—the Daily Nation: The US is a community fueled by hate. They claim not to be racist yet most of them are racist to the core including the black Americans. Yet they want to dictate and lecture us about human rights." Still waiting for GOK [Government of Kenya] to issue travel advisory to the U.S." (This is an apparent reference to the fact that the United States government issues travel advisories to countries like Kenya when such incidents occur and there are riots.) Extra judicial killing. Let UN order an independent investigation & file handed to ICC (international Criminal Court) for prosecution of the culprits. US justice system is biased against its own black community." (The U.S. and human rights organizations have been critical of many countries for extra-judicial killings and have called for the prosecution of government officials in Africa at the International Criminal Court for such actions.) U.S. preaches democracy and good governance all over the world but lo and behold, Ferguson has exposed the preacher who cannot take care of business in his backyard." Has the Kenyan ambassador issued a statement yet? The US must have a coalition government so as to end the violence. It will no longer be business as usual. We will have only necessary contact. Choices have consequences." (This statement is in reference to the U.S. government’s actions following the 2007-2008 post-election violence in Kenya.) In the USA, they give absolute rights to women, children and pets, the men are left on their own, owe [sic] un to you if you happen to be a young black man. You are as good as dead." Scanning media in other African countries, the same kind of reactions are evident. While some opinions differ, the general sentiment expressed in social media is that the United States remains a divided country and thus lacks moral authority to “lecture” Africans on human rights and tribalism. To an extent, these sentiments expressed by Africans are misguided and are largely a gross exaggeration of the character of American society. The views expressed in the media portray an American society that is totally divided across racial lines, which Africans often equate to tribalism on their own continent. They see the economic desperation of many African-Americans as a reflection of a society that has continued to deny a large section of its people opportunities for advancement. All these views, right or wrong, weaken America’s standing among Africans and undermine the country’s ability to influence policy on human rights and governance in the continent. Such incidents give solace to dictators that undertake gross violations of human rights through extrajudicial killings. Many Africans consider the U.S. judicial system to be discriminatory against black men. They also cite biases in many previous cases of police killings of black men. The Zimmerman case in Florida is commonly used in the African media as an example of such incidents where they feel justice did not prevail. But American global leadership in the advancement of human rights and ensuring equal protection under the law—and also in opening up opportunities for all groups—remains critically important. Through fair and transparent adjudication of the Ferguson case, the U.S. will be in a position to demonstrate to the Africans and others who have been critical of the state of affairs in this country that the U.S. remains a country governed by the rule of law. Still, the issue of poverty among some communities gives the U.S. a bad name as a country where a large segment of the population is economically marginalized. As the U.S. encourages Africans to build united and inclusive societies, it should be cognizant of the fact that its voice will carry more weight and be respected if Africans see the same happening in United States. social media Mini Mathur and Saransh Goila discuss food across TV, web and social media By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 29 Aug 2017 03:37:17 GMT Chef Saransh Goila and TV personality Mini Mathur at Silver Beach Cafe, Juhu. Pics/Pradeep Dhivar The glass walls overlooking a quiet street at Silver Beach Café are misty. Chef Saransh Goila is early and orders a plate of Eggs Benedict, Beetroot Cous Cous Salad and a glass each of orange and carrot juice, choices that TV host Mini Mathur is happy with when she walks in. "The last time we met we were both drunk," Mathur says animatedly. Both TV stars are currently hosting digital food shows. Goila has married his two loves — fitness and food — for his Facebook show Run to Eat (Singapore). Mathur has been cooking with Bollywood stars for her show The Mini Truck. One is a trained chef and the other a home cook, but when they speak, their love for rich traditional food takes over. Sabhnani: How did an erstwhile vegetarian chef move to selling butter chicken?Goila: In Delhi, my vegetarian family was tired of eating sweet paneer. So I smoked the gravy for them. That's how I came up with it. My friends in Mumbai loved it. We are actually Goels, my great-grandfather changed it to 'Goila'. When I was opening Goila Butter Chicken, my dad got calls asking him, 'Can't he just call it Saransh's Butter Chicken?' Once I graduated, I realised you cannot be a chef who is vegetarian.Mathur: Mera butter chicken khaake dekho, hum bhi Dilliwalle hai! I am a Kayasth married to a Hyderabadi. Both the families are very proud of traditional recipes. I hate bastardised versions of food — if someone gave me Szechuan dosa, I'd spit on them! Every Diwali, I pickle six kilos of aloo or chana for achaar. I will make some for you and you can give me butter chicken instead. Sabhnani: Your new shows are shot internationally, though…Mathur: My next show, Mini Me, is about a bad**s mum travelling with her seven-year-old. We went to 15 cities across six countries in Europe in 25 days. It was originally shot for digital viewing, but a channel picked it up.Goila: Run to Eat (Singapore) was originally supposed to be shot in India, but I didn't get support from the state tourism boards. Sabhnani: You must have collected many stories while shooting.Goila: Once, on an uphill trek in Himachal, we saw a tree full of apples. As soon as I plucked one, I slipped. I quickly grabbed a branch or I would have rolled down the hill. Things you do for apples and shots!Mathur: Sunny Leone is such a cool woman. When she shot for my show, she said things like, 'Now let's grind.' I had to control my crew. Sabhnani: Was the shift to digital platforms a natural progression?Mathur: Digital is the future. The problem is figuring out how to monetise it.Goila: Every time I enter a house party, there is a group of people watching something on their phones. My mom wants a Chromecast!Mathur: People are waking up to the fact that watching TV at an appointed time is not necessary. Eggs Benedict, Beetroot Cous Cous Salad and juices arriveGoila: My plate looks beautiful! They have made an effort.Mathur: Do you always shoot your food before you eat? The whole thing of 'let's tuck in yaar' is not happening any more. Sabhnani: The impact of social media is huge...Goila: People explore social media, and not colleges, for learning, which is fine. But one out of 100 people succeeds that way.Mathur: I mostly find positivity on Instagram and YouTube. Twitter is a different universe.Goila: Sometimes you have to choose to ignore it [trolls]. It's also driven by brands and PR.Mathur: Today, you can backslap a star online and say, 'Hey, I don't like your moustache!' Sabhnani: Do looks matter?Goila: I am not the best-looking chef in the country. I generally believe in fitness (I used weigh 93kg). You can't judge a chef by his belly, though.Mathur: If you are good-looking, it can't harm you. Sabhnani: Dilliwallah's take on Mumbai's food?Mathur: I love Maharashtra's coastal cuisine. Mumbai should give up on chaat; vada pav is your thing. The Mughlai scene is better in the north.Goila: The international cuisine spread is better in Mumbai.Mathur: Eat food at the place where it comes from. Don't go asking for vada pavs in Delhi.Quick takes Full Article

social media Zaira Wasim lashes out at trolls on social media: Don't be a reason for someone's misery or sorrow By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 3 May 2020 01:50:00 GMT In 2016, Bollywood got a stellar performer in the form of Zaira Wasim, thanks to Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal. And with Secret Superstar and The Sky Is Pink, she proved to be a force to reckon with at a tender age. But she quit acting as she felt it was a hindrance to her religion. Despite mixed reactions, she stood by her decision and people respected her for that. However, despite quitting Bollywood, Zaira manages to grab attention through her social media posts. Recently, she posted a statement on her social media account on how trolls can affect people and traumatise them for the rest of their lives. She also asked people for empathy. "We remain so unaware of the power of our words, an utter them without giving them an ounce of thought, little it is that we realise that our actions, words and stupid jokes impact people and influence their beliefs about their own esteem and integrity. Imagine somebody out there genuinely believes he's a loser just because of you, because of a joke, a meme, a comment you made just to look cool or funny in-front of your followers, but not everyone's born with a thick skin, not everyone can withstand the harsh criticism," she wrote. She also reacted to how negative comments, trolls, memes and jokes can severely impact the mental well being and self-esteem of a person. "Imagine somebody out there genuinely believes he's a loser just because of you, because of a joke, a meme, a comment you made just to look cool or funny in-front of your followers, but not everyone's born with a thick skin, not everyone can withstand the harsh criticism," she said. The Secret Superstar actress added, "Some are more vulnerable that others and become easily overwhelmed and disappointed in themselves, your words could be a reason for someone's heart to shatter, for someone to cry all night long. It can damage and traumatise someone beyond where language can reach and could scar someone for the rest of their lives. We refuse to even countenance the idea that some just have to struggle much more to reach minimum expectations." social media Aamir Khan encourages budding scriptwriters to write more enthusiastically; will announce winners of script contest on social media By Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 05:28:45 GMT In 2017, Aamir Khan started a project to boost budding writers in the Indian film industry. The second edition of Cinestaan India's Storyteller Script Contest, a nationwide hunt for scripts where the five winners take home a total cash prize of Rs. 50 lakh was launched this February. From the past few months, the four-member jury consisting of Aamir Khan, Anjum Rajabali, Juhi Chaturvedi and Rajkumar Hirani has gone through numerous entries to choose five compelling stories that can be taken to screen. However, this time instead of the on-ground event to announce the winners, Aamir Khan will unveil the winners on social media. Meanwhile, Khan is urging writers to not let the prevailing situation dampen their creativity. He said that budding writers should write with more enthusiasm, especially during these times. Says Rohit Khattar, Chairman of Cinestaan Digital, “I am grateful to our esteemed jury in working with us to bring Indian storytelling talent to the forefront especially during these surreal times. Thank you to the thousands of writers who had applied. The quality of the work was stellar and we would like to congratulate the winners who are truly deserving and wish them success.” Speaking about the winners, Anjum Rajabali, the Jury Chairperson said, ‘We started this contest with the larger objective of attracting more people to write scripts. It’s very important that we improve the quality of our scriptwriting so that the quality of our cinema goes up. The caliber of scripts in this edition was better than last year and it’s heartening to see that the talent is developing. Thank you to the jury members for giving their valuable time in reading and assessing the scripts. Truly appreciate the Cinestaan team’s hard work. I have not seen this kind of unconditional support and generosity before, with the only reward being to encourage good writing in this country.’ Juhi Chaturvedi says, ‘As a writer, I understand the joy of being appreciated, especially on a big platform like this which motivates us to write more. Congratulations to the winners. I’m very happy that through this contest I was able to be a small part of your journey.’ Raju Hirani while congratulating the winners said, ‘I’m happy that the objective with which this contest was started, to inspire scriptwriters and give them a platform to send their scripts from all parts of the country - slowly and steadily we are moving towards our goal. The caliber of scripts this year has been better than last year.’ All the entries of the second edition of the contest went through a transparent and stringent process of evaluation at various levels. The shortlisted synopsis were asked to send in a complete script which were then assessed and then the winners selected by the jury. All scripts have been registered by the contestants with the Scriptwriters Association and other similar recognized bodies to ensure that the writers' content is completely protected. ‘Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Script Contest’ was launched by Cinestaan Digital Pvt. Ltd. and is India’s biggest Script Contest. The winners of the contest are awarded cash prizes worth Rs. 50 lakhs.
