How to manage your expenses so you are never broke

Representational picture

Are you someone that likes living life on the edge, from salary to salary, buying something as and when you set eyes on it, without worrying about your savings, and a "dekha jayega" attitude? That may seem cool -- but it's also a short cut to financial disaster. Walnut App CEO and Co-Founder Patanjali Somayaji lists five ways to ensure you don't go broke. Ever.

Download a money management app to track your expenses
If you have never been the type to track your expenses, now is a good time to start. You can download an app that tracks your spends and set a budget, keep a watch on your upcoming credit card and utility bill payments, as well as see how much you owe or have to get from others. This is the first step to getting your finances streamlined.

Make a plan and set goals for yourself
Set short-term (a few months ahead) and long-term (a year and beyond) goals. It could be anything from taking up a new hobby like learning the guitar, to buying a new phone/laptop/camera, getting married, buying a new house or being debt-free by a certain date, and so on. Based on the plan, break it down into quarterly and monthly goals so you know how much to save, how much is safe to spend and so on. Having a plan will give you an overview and much better control of your finances.

Set up an emergency fund
Once you're tracking your spends and have set goals, you know how much money you need to allocate to each of them. You would also get an estimate of your spending pattern and expenses for each month. Based on this, have an emergency fund in place that will take care of at least 6-8 months' worth of living expenses so that in case of a mishap or a loss of job, you don't go broke, and have something to fall back on. You can set it up so that a certain percentage of your salary/income each month is automatically transferred to this fund. It could be in a different bank account, a fixed deposit, or even a liquid fund -- and most importantly, it should be accessible easily and quickly when needed urgently.

Set limits for your spend categories
Take a look at your spends in greater detail to understand where the money goes each month. Assign limits to each of these categories for the month and see how you're doing at the end of the month. This will give you an idea of your lifestyle and if you're spending more than you earn, as well as where you can cut down on unnecessary spends.

Stay debt-free
Credit cards can be extremely useful -- for regular spends as well as during emergencies, and over time, with a good payment history, can boost your credit score too. However, if you're the type of person who cannot pay off credit card bills in full each month or who just pays the minimum amount due, stick to using your debit card or cash, or even a Line of Credit, which has a lower interest rate. Revolving credit on a credit card can be dangerous for your finances, and it can take you several years to repay the entire outstanding amount.

There will always be changes in situations, your current needs and requirements as well as your cash flow, so every 3-6 months, you should re-look at your plan and goals, and modify as needed to stay on top of your finances.

Mumbai: 'No fire fighting system in Atlas building where fire broke out'

A fire broke out in an apartment on the sixth floor of the Atlas building on Napean Sea Road on Tuesday morning. While the occupants managed to rush down to safety, two women on the upper floors got stuck and were rescued by the fire brigade personnel.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade said the fire was reported at 4.41 am and they reached the site at 4.55 am with three fire engines, four jumbo tankers and one turntable ladder. However, they faced hurdles as the road leading to the building was packed because of parking.

"The team reached on time, but there several vehicles were parked on the road, blocking fire fighting vehicles' way to the building," said local corporator Jyotsna Mehta.

The firemen then went to the opposite building and were able to douse the flames after almost four hours. Deputy Fire Officer A J Mishra also pointed out that the parking was one of the major hurdle in the operation. "There was a strong wind too," he said. "We got a water connection and started operation from the opposite building to stop the vertical spread of the fire. So the major casualty averted," he said, adding that the fire was brought under control around 8.40 am.

A fireman said, "The residents left all the doors of the flat open. So it was difficult to search the origin of the fire. Besides, there wasn't a fire fighting system inside the building that is more than 30 years old."

The cause of the fire is not known.

'My broken engagement still haunts me...'

Dear Diana,
I am 33 and single. Six years ago, I was in a relationship with a guy in the neighbourhood. We had got engaged too, but later we broke off. His family felt I was not suitable for their son and they then relocated to Surat. Ever since my engagement broke off, I have not had any guy on the scene. My parents have now registered me on a marriage website. They feel I should settle down. But I believe that I will never get married due to my broken engagement. Will I ever find someone who will love me? Someone who will not ask unwanted questions about my past? I have become a recluse after the break up. My parents are worried about me.
— Rasika

Dear Rasika,
A broken engagement does not mean that you will not find love again. So do not lose heart. You could be second time lucky. Just think that this guy was not meant for you. You needed someone better. Let the engagement break up remain where it is — in the distant past. There is no point brooding about it and crying over it. After the break up, you have cut yourself from the social scene. There is no reason to do so. Hang out with your pals, you never know when and where you will meet Mr Right. Your parents are concerned about you and want you to be happy. Let them register you on a matrimonial website. I am sure they will find the best for you. At the same time, do not put pressure on yourself to get hitched. You cannot go looking for love, it just comes your way.

Diana will solve it!

'She left me heartbroken...'

Dear Diana,
I was with this girl for almost two years. I thought she was serious about me. I used to splurge on her and did whatever she fancied. Last week, however, she sprung a surprise. She told me her family had fixed her marriage. As the guy was based in the Gulf, she would soon be relocating after marriage. She told me that a small engagement ceremony had taken place at home. The marriage has been fixed for June. I was taken aback. All this while, she did not even once tell me that her parents were finding a match for her. We were planning a future together till last week and then she drops a bombshell that she is getting married to someone else. I am shattered. She has left me heartbroken. Now she refuses to meet me or answer my calls. What do I do? How could she just dump me like this? I am angry as well as sad. It is not that her family did not know about my existence. What should I do? She was my first love.
— Deep'

Dear Deep,
This girl just played with your feelings. You are a fool to have fallen in her trap. She knew from the beginning that she would not marry you. She considered you as time pass. You splurged on her and did whatever she fancied. This suited her fine. You seemed to have been her stop-gap arrangement till her parents found her a suitable match. Now that she has found someone, she has dumped you. You may be nursing a broken heart, but at the same time remember, there is no point moaning for her loss. This girl did not care for you or your feelings. She never loved you. So get going with your life. You have learnt your lesson. Next time be wary. When you feel down in the dumps, remember she did not reciprocate your feelings, so why even think about her? Move on as you deserve someone better.

Kerala is broke: State FM Isaac

A month after the lockdown, Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Isaac on Saturday said that the state has been reeling under huge financial crisis as all that the state government could raise in April was a mere R250 crore. "If we include what the Centre would give us in all, we will be able to touch R2,000 crore. For payment of salaries, we require R2,500 crore," said Isaac.

"Then, a way out is to draw from the Ways and Means System (WAMS) and, including overdraft, it will come to R2,500 crore. After that the treasury would be closed. Such is the situation that we are in," the Finance Minister said. Isaac was peeved at the way the various staff organisations attached to the Congress-led UDF strongly opposed the suggestion of requesting all state government employees to contribute one month's salary to the CM COVID Relief Fund.

"We are at a loss to gauge the mentality of such people who opposed our request. We demanded it to help our people who are suffering. Since they have opposed, we could not go forward with it. Hence we have decided to cut the salary of all. It will start from next month. Salary for six days every month will be cut for the next five months," said the former economist Isaac.

Meanwhile, with the Centre considering repatriation of the Indian diaspora who wish to return to Kerala, a state minister said the government is ready to accept whatever the number is. State Minister for Higher Education KT Jaleel said that one lakh people are likely to return. According to studies, there are an estimated 2.5 million Keralites, 90 per cent of them in various Middle East countries.

Danish Kaneria replies to Inzamam's jibe: If PCB had supported me, I would have broken many big records

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria might be currently serving a life ban for his involvement in fixing, but he has once again taken the attack to the Pakistan Cricket Board saying that he wasnt supported enough by the PCB.

In a YouTube video, former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq had spoken about how Brian Lara had taken Kaneria to the cleaners even though the Pakistan captain had placed fielders on the boundary and thereby shown his true class.

But taking to Twitter, Kaneria wrote: "I have taken @BrianLara's wicket 5 times in my career. He was a good cricketer. If PCB had supported me, I would have broken many big records."

Describing the episode, Inzamam had said: "Kaneria bowled a googly and Lara hit the ball back towards the bowler, coming out of his crease. Danish said ‘well played Brian', which prompted Lara to say ‘okay sir'. The next three balls were all dispatched over the boundary.

"I was the captain of the side so I went over to Danish and told him to tease Lara a bit more. I felt he was angry so we might make him throw away his wicket. I placed the fielders on the boundary in anticipation of big shots but he still managed to outfox us by hitting Danish to all parts of the ground."

Kaneria had earlier asked Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh to help the hindus in Pakistan as they fight the coronavirus outbreak.

"I request @YUVSTRONG12 and @harbhajan_singh to make a video for the minorities living in Pakistan as well. They need your help in this moment of #coronacrisis," Kaneria had said in a tweet.
