COVID-19 & Kawasaki Disease In Children: What Is This Rare Condition & Is It Linked To Coronavirus?

According to a recent report, around 100 children in six European countries and at least 25 children in New York City, have been hospitalized with symptoms that seemed similar to that of an inflammatory disease called Kawasaki disease [1].

Corticosteroid Pulse Combination Therapy for Refractory Kawasaki Disease: A Randomized Trial

The efficacy of intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroid pulse combination therapy for refractory Kawasaki disease has been established. The Egami score can be used to predict which patients are likely to have refractory Kawasaki disease.

As a new strategy for primary treatment, intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroid pulse combination therapy is safe and effective for patients predicted to have refractory Kawasaki disease based on the Egami score. (Read the full article)

Late Intravenous Immunoglobulin Treatment in Patients With Kawasaki Disease

The effectiveness of intravenous immunoglobulin treatment of patients with Kawasaki disease within 9 days of illness has been established. However, the effectiveness of such treatment ≥10 days after illness onset has not yet been clarified.

Intravenous immunoglobulin treatment ≥10 days after illness onset was observed to be effective for achieving inflammation resolution. Patients who are strongly suspected to have Kawasaki disease and demonstrate ongoing inflammation should therefore be treated as soon as possible. (Read the full article)

Long-term Cardiovascular Outcomes in Survivors of Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki disease (KD) results in coronary aneurysm formation and an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Modern treatment of acute KD with intravenous immunoglobulin substantially reduces the rate of acute aneurysm formation.

This study reveals that long-term cardiovascular outcomes for KD patients in the current era are not significantly different than matched controls without KD. Late cardiovascular complications are almost exclusively seen in patients with persistent coronary aneurysms. (Read the full article)

The Epidemiology and Clinical Features of Kawasaki Disease in Australia

The incidence of Kawasaki disease is increasing in many countries. The only reported Australian incidence (3.4/100 000 <5 years) is almost 20 years old and the current Australian epidemiology and outcomes are unknown.

We analyzed 30 years’ total population hospitalization data from Western Australia. Kawasaki disease incidence increased markedly from 1979 to 2009 and is currently 9.34/100 000 <5 years. The epidemiology and cardiovascular outcomes are similar to other predominantly European-Caucasian populations. (Read the full article)

Concurrent Respiratory Viruses and Kawasaki Disease

Making a diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (KD) is often a diagnostic dilemma. This dilemma is confounded when children present with symptoms consistent with known, common respiratory viruses and/or with KD symptoms that could potentially be attributed to a respiratory virus.

Patients with KD commonly have a concurrent respiratory viral infection. Clinicians should not dismiss the diagnosis of KD based on the presence of respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, a positive respiratory virus test result should not be used to exclude the diagnosis of KD. (Read the full article)
