glacier World’s glaciers melting fast: 9.6 trillion tonnes of ice lost in last 50 years By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Mon, 30 Mar 2020 11:25:30 GMT The most comprehensive glacier assessment yet reveals that glacier melt was responsible for 27mm of sea level rise between 1961 and 2016. Ice loss from glaciers is now the second biggest contributor to rising sea levels after warming water. If glaciers continue to melt at current rates, most — including many in central Asia, central Europe, western Canada and the USA — will vanish during the second half of this century. Full Article
glacier Complexity of glacier ice loss captured in new estimates of sea level rise By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 18 Jul 2013 09:48:23 +0100 Greenland’s four major glaciers could contribute 19 to 30 mm to sea level rise by 2200, according to a new study. The researchers developed a sophisticated model which provides new insight into the effects of climate change on Greenland’s glaciers, by capturing the complex processes involved in their movement and melt. glacier Risk of steep glacier collapse in the Alps will considerably increase due to climate warming By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 26 Nov 2015 09:18:14 GMT Glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change. This study focused on hanging glaciers in the French Alps, where warming is increasing the risk of glaciers collapsing. The authors applied a state-of-the-art numerical model to a particularly hazardous glacier in Mont Blanc to simulate how it will respond to climate change. The results suggest the glacier may become unstable in the current century, posing a risk to the inhabitants of the valley below. Full Article
glacier Industrial pollutant melted European glaciers By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 9 Jan 2014 11:03:18 GMT Industrial emissions of black carbon were responsible for the retreat of the glaciers in the European Alps that marked the end of the so-called ‘Little Ice Age’, according to a new study. The researchers explain how black carbon deposits could have caused glaciers to melt more rapidly from the mid-19th century and suggest that human activities were already having a visible influence on the climate before the effects of carbon dioxide were evident. These two meditative pieces on Meyers' album Mirror in Mirror (itself a reference to Pärt) contribute to a whole characterized by haunting beauty—featuring lullabies and sunken ships. "You have to create this beautiful sonic world full of color and movement and breath, and to make it sing, yet while sculpting these long, slow notes," says Meyers of Reisman's adaptation. "It felt to me like color coating a glacier." Listen to the full conversation between Of Note's Katy Henriksen and violinist Anne Akiko Meyers by clicking on the streaming link above. Full Article
