New research explores the many existing methods for assessing benthic communities to ensure that the most appropriate and useful tests are used under the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

Assessing the environmental condition of sediments and bottom waters of coastal and marine ecosystems over wide geographic areas can be a problem when indicators used to evaluate specific ecological conditions cannot be easily compared. A recent study suggests that a common scale of assessment can be established by experts from different regions using "best professional judgement".

An elongate rectangular cultivation box having an open top, is configured so as to allow an outer tank, which serves as a cultivating water storage part, and an inner tank, which serves as a receptacle for bivalves (benthic organisms) S that are to be cultivated, to be both combined and separated. A gap that serves as a water supply opening and a gap that serves as a space in which sediments can accumulate on the bottom of the outer tank are defined when the inner tank is accommodated in the outer tank. Water passage holes are provided in the bottom of the shellfish receptacle (inner tank) and a mesh filter such as netting is stretched across the top face of the bottom. The cultivation boxes are arranged in a vertically stacked manner, with the front portions and rear portions thereof staggered so that cultivation water W that overflows over a front ledge of a shellfish receptacle flows downward into the supply water storage part of a lower cultivation box.

A new larger benthic porcelaneous foraminifer of soritid affinity is described as Tarburina zagrosiana n. gen., n. sp. from the late Maastrichtian of the Tarbur Formation, Zagros Zone, SW Iran. It occurs in foraminiferal–dasycladalean wackestones and packstones, in association with Loftusia ssp., dicyclinids/cuneolinids, Neobalkhania bignoti Cherchi & Schroeder, Gyroconulina columellifera Schroeder & Darmoian, Spirolina? farsiana Schlagintweit & Rashidi, Broeckina cf. dufrenoyi (d'Archiac), other benthic foraminifers, and dasycladalean algae. Due to its elongate test and marginal chamber subdivision by aligned vertical partitions, Tarburina n. gen. can be compared with representatives of the Praerhapydionininae. The interio-marginal slit-like foramina/aperture of Tarburina represents an outstanding feature in complex porcelaneous taxa. The monospecific genus Tarburina is considered a Maastrichtian newcomer within the Late Cretaceous Global Community Maturation cycle of larger benthic foraminifera. A biostratigraphic and palaeobiogeographical restriction seems possible, as reported for many other Late Cretaceous larger benthic foraminifera.
