State’s traders and transporters challenge State Weighbridge Policy

Staff Reporter
SHILLONG, Dec 19: The Association of Meghalaya Traders and Transporters (AMTT) has filed a writ petition before the Meghalaya High Court challenging the recently approved State Weighbridge Policy 2018.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, AMTT president Enrico Pasi said that the petition is also against the notification of the state government with regards to the numbers and location of weighbridges to be set up across the state.
He said the government’s notification on weighbridges is highly arbitrary as in a single route more than 7 weighbridges are proposed to be set up. “This will lead to random extortion and harassment to truckers as all their reasonable profits which they are making during the course of their trade and commerce will have to be shed off to the government weighbridges,” Pasi said.

Hopes of rescuing trapped miners dwindle

Staff Reporter
SHILLONG, Dec 19: As hopes dwindle with each passing day and no progress on the rescue operations to save the 14 coal miners trapped in East Jaintia Hills, the Meghalaya government’s approach for help from the Defence authorities too has not yielded any positive outcome.
Days of tireless rescue efforts have been bogged down by a major factor- the flooded mine and the water level not receding in the flooded mine. The defence authorities too could not render any help when approached as they have pumps which can pump water from only a depth of 70 metres while the mine in East Jaintia Hills is around 350 feet.
