Listen (or don't) to an outrageous robocall against a Sandpoint mayoral candidate

Politics has long had whisper campaigns, with negative rumors — racial, sexual, criminal — spread secretly by campaigns. Of course, with the advent of the automated robocall, you don't need to be subtle about it anymore.

So it is with a recent robocall against Sandpoint mayoral candidate Shelby Rognstad…

No, Council President Stuckart should not be deleting important voicemails about city business

When City Council President Ben Stuckart told Attorney Laura McAloon he would not be willing to support her for city attorney this week, he cited two reasons: The first was her interactions with the independent investigator looking into the city's police chief scandal, which partly led to the investigator watering down key findings from her report. But the second was a "nasty" voicemail that McAloon sent to Stuckart's personal cellphone, where she allegedly called him a liar.

In other words, a single voicemail had become a crucial part of the story.

On August 2, the Inlander made a records request intending to obtain that voicemail, and other recent voicemails from or to McAloon from city leaders during that period…

    1. wrong not to do so, given the historical juncture we're at
    2. fun to do so, given the place we're at
  • at least two hundred points to anyone who knows of a good punk-adjacent or riot grrl-adjacent concert to go to. other genres considered too

SF / East Bay Mefi 25 year anniversary BBQ

Oh snack! MetaFilter's 25 year anniversary is this weekend! East Bay (and other Bay Area) mefites, let's meet up! I couldn't think of an easy venue that is outdoors and works with who-knows-how-many-people, except for my back yard! Come hang out and eat some food! Sunday, Jul 14, 2pm until close. I probably won't start the grill until 4 or 5, so have brunch or late brunch (portmanteau: "lunch") beforehand.

It's last minute so I have no idea how much people will show up, so rather than provision based on guesses, let's just everyone potluck it up!

  • If you want to bring something, great! Comment below so everyone doesn't each bring twelve of the same thing.
  • If you don't want to bring anything, great!
  • If you don't know, you can flip a coin, or defer your decision until after you arrive, because:
  • There is a grocery store literally directly across the street from my house. It's pricey but if we run out of groceries, we can get more groceries, and then eat the groceries. Yum, groceries!
  • There's a bunch of restaurants nearby that can do take out or delivery if you hate all this BBQ business. My back yard is pretty big and fine for kids and well-behaved dogs. I've got a gas grill. Two cars can park in my driveway on a first come first serve basis. The neighborhood can otherwise be difficult to park in. Nearest BART is MacArthur, which is about a mile away, and there's bike share docks there and close to here.

    Swords of the Serpentine TTRPG

Sundays, noon to three Pacific via Roll20 and Discord! Room for up to four players! Swords of the Serpentine is a fantasy role-playing game based on the GUMSHOE engine. It emphasizes investigative play, following leads, unraveling mysteries, and over-the-top swashbuckling action. To quote the blurb on the back of the rulebook: "a game of daring heroism, sly politics, and bloody savagery, set in a fantasy city rife with skullduggery and death". No experience necessary, we're all new to the game and learning together.

We are: two old guys and one of 'em's college-aged kid who have just wrapped up a Blades in the Dark campaign that ran 20-something sessions and are looking for a new game to play. You are: committed to playing weekly familiar with and able to access to both Discord and Roll20 reliably up for a role-playing game that emphasizes world-building through player participation interested in joining a friendly and welcoming table that likes sampling different systems (yeah, we gonna hafta play Eat The Reich pretty soon, I think...) If this sounds like a thing you'd be interested in doing, leave a comment below. I'll follow up with you via MeFi mail and we'll take it from there.

    Uganda Independence Day 2024

    Date: October 9, 2024

This Doodle celebrates Uganda’s Independence Day! On this day in 1961, the Ugandan Constitutional Conference came to a close and marked the birth of the nation as a sovereign state.

The conference started in September and took place in London. After a month of negotiations between the budding Ugandan government and Great Britain, a formal transition of power was agreed upon and carried out on October 9th.

On Independence Day, many partake in celebrations across the country. The main event occurs in the capital city Kampala, where people attend observances like flag-raising ceremonies, lively rallies, traditional music concerts, and more. An annual grand parade is held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where the national anthem Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty is played for all to sing along. Ugandans enjoy delicacies like matoke (steamed and mashed green bananas), luwombo (slow-cooked meat with peanut sauce), chapati (egg omelet wrapped in chapati), and more. Meanwhile, the black, yellow, and red national flag waves high in the sky all day long — just like in today’s artwork.

    Happy Independence Day, Uganda!

    Azerbaijan Independence Day 2024

    Date: October 18, 2024

Today’s Doodle celebrates Azerbaijan’s Restoration of Independence Day, one of two Independence Days the nation celebrates. On this day in 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act of State Independence of Azerbaijan, ending over 70 years of Soviet rule.

Azerbaijan’s first Independence Day takes place on May 28, commemorating the day in 1918 when the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was established. This made the nation the first democratic republic in the Middle East. This independence was interrupted when the Soviets  invaded in 1920, leading to the second Independence Day on October 18th, Restoration of Independence Day.

After work, people attend parades or gather with friends and family to enjoy a delicious meal like plov, which has many regional variations that contain rice, dried fruit, nuts, and meat. It is also common for people to display the nation’s flag, like the one waving in today’s Doodle.

Happy Restoration of Independence Day, Azerbaijan!

    Türkiye National Day 2024

    Date: October 29, 2024

Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Türkiye’s Republic Day! On this day in 1923, The Grand National Assembly declared Türkiye to be a republic officially and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who led the country’s independence movement, was elected as the first president.

On Republic Day, state officials and citizens visit Anıtkabir in Ankara to commemorate the founding father of The Republic of Türkiye, Atatürk, and lay wreaths on his mausoleum. People also gather in streets and stadiums for celebrations and traditionally, they join celebratory walks which are held in the evening.

All across the country, the red-and-white Turkish flag can be seen floating high in the sky — just like in today’s artwork. At night, an awe-inspiring firework show lights up the night sky for the celebrations.

    Happy Republic Day, Türkiye!

    Cambodia Independence Day 2024

    Date: November 9, 2024

Today’s Doodle celebrates Cambodia’s Independence Day. On this day in 1953, Cambodia declared independence from France, ending nearly a century of foreign rule.

While festivities take place across the country, the largest are held in Phnom Penh. Government officials kick off the holiday with a formal ceremony at the Independence Monument, broadcast nationwide. The flag of Cambodia is raised and a ceremonial flame is lit before the next observance kicks off: parades! Colorful floats, marching bands, and military personnel proceed by as crowds wave Cambodia’s blue, red, and white flag, which depicts the main building of the Angkor Wat temple complex.

Families and friends often gather around tables to share lavish feasts and traditional dishes. As festivities wind down, fireworks light up the night sky.

    Happy Independence Day, Cambodia!

    Poland National Day 2024

    Date: November 11, 2024

Today’s Doodle celebrates Poland’s National Day, known as Narodowe Święto Niepodległości. On this day in 1918, World War I ended, marking the rebirth of an independent Poland, free after a century of partition.

Today, red and white, Poland’s national colors since the 13th century, are displayed everywhere. Faces are painted, flags wave from buildings, and a sea of red and white shirts fill the streets, all showcasing the nation’s vibrant spirit. Towns come alive with the sights and sounds of parades. In Warsaw, “The March of Independence,” proceeds through Constitution Square, complete with red flares, while smaller parades echo with marching bands and cheers of onlookers.

Independence Day is also a time to toast the nation’s rich culture and history with family and friends. Happy Independence Day, Poland!
